My Family Observed Earth Hour for the Fourth Time

We started observing Earth Hour last 2009. It was the year I was introduced to this idea of saving at least an hour of electricity consumption to save Mother Earth. We observed it at our boarding house with my husband and our two kids. After that year, we made it into an annual family event in hopes that our children will grow up with the awareness to save what is left of our beautiful planet.

Earth Hour 2011 – SM City Bacolod

On 2010 and 2011, we went to SM City Bacolod to observe Earth Hour. We love spent our time there because the children can see that even big businesses like SM City Supermalls do care in saving the planet too. Aside from that, I also enjoy the program they have. They have songs related to saving our planet and also tips and suggestions on how to save beyond the hour and live a green life.

Just a while ago, we went to SM City Cagayan de Oro to observe Earth Hour 2012. Still, we went as a family. We were quite shock as we are expecting another educational program with entertainment on the side but unfortunately it was more “entertaining” rather than “educational.” Despite the program flow, I am grateful to see that SM City Cagayan de Oro really did their best to pursue the cause. My children were again amazed how a big business turned off most of their lights in observance of the Earth Hour.

Anyway, one of the most amazing facts that I learned is that the Philippines is an official Earth Hour ‘Hero Country’ with a record-breaking 1661 cities and municipalities who switched off their lights last 2011. Making the Philippines a three-time Earth Hour champion since 2009! All I can say is kudos to the Philippine Government, Non-Government Offices, Private Sectors and the entire Filipino citizens who made effort to make this possible!

As for my family, Earth Hour is not just for one hour but a lifetime commitment to save Mother Earth. We will try to live our everyday lives knowing and believing that no matter how small, we can make a difference to make this world a better place.

How about you guys, when did you start observing Earth Hour? How did you observe Earth Hour?

I and my Filipino friends here in our area in Indonesia joined the Earth hour though we didn’t follow the Filipino time expecting that our neighbors would observe the same. Too bad,it’s only us among the many houses in the area had switched off all our electricity to join the campaign. We have been observing it also since 2009 with the same group of friends. We would gather in one of the houses with lots of food just doing chika and share jokes with our electricity shut!:)

I love how Philippines would celebrate it and that make us proud as Filipinos here being the Earth Hour Champion for 3 years!:)

i love how you made it as a family tradition as well!:)

  • Wow, it’s nice to see that Earth Hour is being observed nationwide, even in provinces far from Metro Manila. 🙂

My parents are not too aware of Earth Hour so it’s usually just me and my lil sis turning the lights off in our room. I hope we get to observe Earth Hour house-wide next year.

We have to do as much as we can to stop climate change and improve the environment. Observing Earth Hour every year seems a very small step but that’s how every success campaign starts. Tiny steps that lead to change and betterment.
